DD-373 was not the first Shaw to lose her bow in war. DD-68, the first Shaw had her bow severed when her rudders jammed during a convoy escort in World War One. Unable to change course, she charged in front of the liner Aquitania and had 90 feet of her bow severed off. Despite the catastrophic damage Shaw's crew saved their ship and she returned to fight, eventually being scrapped in 1934. |
