Shaw on Fire Shaw on fire about 9AM Sunday, December 7th. The battleship Nevada has grounded to the right and swung around due to the current after trying to sortie out to attack the Japanese fleet and coming under intense bombardment by aircraft hoping to sink her in the harbor and block it.
Shaw on Fire Shaw on fire shortly after 9AM Sunday, December 7th. It is thought two of the three bombs that hit Shaw were meant for the Nevada which is to the right.
Shaw on Fire in the Drydock USS Shaw on fire in the drydock. Oil from her tanks had poured out and onto the deck of the drydock below, catching fire and prohibiting the crew from exiting the drydock to shore from the gang planks
This picture was taken shortly after the above picture from a different vantage point. Smoke from the oil fire can be seen pouring out of the side of the drydock and fire extends upwards past Shaw's superstructure.
Shaw on Fire across the Harbor A view of Shaw on fire from the 1010 dock. Shaw is on fire on the right side of the image, above the capsized and sunk Oglala
Shaw forward Magazine explodes The forward magazine on the USS Shaw explodes at 9:30AM. The force of the explosion severed the bow from the rest of the hull
Another view of the explosion Another view of the explosion taken farther up Ford Island. Efforts to flood the dock to put out the fire did not complete before the explosion, but coupled with the damage from the explosion were enough to sink the dock.
Fireball on Ford Island As the fireball from Shaw rises sailors on the debris covered Ford Island seaplane base tarmac look on.
Shaw settles and burns Shaw and the drydock settle into the harbor waters. Sailors can be seen on shore to the left still fighting the fires.
Damanged Shaw A view of Shaw and YFD-2 from dead astern, smoldering but no longer on fire. Although her bow was blown off Shaw did not sink.
View from the Bow Shaw's Broken hull floating in the oil soaked waters of Pearl Harbor. The severed bow can be seen just ahead of the superstructure lying on its starboard side.
Damanged Superstructure A view of port side of the heavily damaged superstructure. Damage from heat and explosion is readily apparent. This entire structure had to be removed for the journey back to the West coast and a temprary bridge added.
Salvage begins Salvage and inspection begins. Here, a launch pulls alongside as sailors start the work that would allow Shaw to be pulled from the dock so repair work could begin.
Overhead View Overhead view of Navy Yard taken December 10th, showing Shaw floating half-out of the sunk YFD-2. Of note are the black streaks of oil fouling the harbor.
The Torn Bow The wrecked bow on January 11, 1942, two days after the drydock was refloated. Clearly seen are the effects of the intense fire and explosion that blew the bow off the ship.
