M-240
7.62mm Machine Gun
M-240b

The M-240 was recently selected by the US Army to replace the venerable M-60 Machine gun. The M-240 is a version of FN's MAG 58 general-purpose machine gun. It is chambered to fire the 7.62mm NATO round and is very reliable, with en estimated 26,000 Mean Rounds Between Failure (MRBF). Advantages of this weapon include its popularity with other nation's forces and hi modularity and number of configurations. In the event of a helicopter crash, the pintel-mounted M-240d could have the buttstock and bipod of the M-240b added; allowing the weapon to be used for self defense by surviving crew members.

Variants include:
M-240 Basic M-240 outfitted for use in vehicles
M-240b M-240 for infantry use. Equipped with a thermal shield over the rear of the barrel to protect the operator.
M-240c M-240 designed for use internally in M2/M3 Bradley IFV's
M-240d M-240 tailored for use on pintel mounts (in helicopters and outside tanks)
M-240g M-240 tailored for the US Marine Corps and para ops. The heat shield of the b variant is removed and there are special fittings for night sights
