First, let's start out with outright hypocracy. The day after he takes office he cuts federal funding for international groups that conduct abortion aided activities. Even if they conduct it with their own money that is separate from the money they revceive from the US Government, they are cut off. Now, a week after that he proposed a plan that would allow faith-based organizations to receive federal funding to perform social services. So we can't trust groups like Planned Parenthood to keep their monies separate but we can trust faith based organizations to keep that separation of church and state with federal dollars.
This, naturally, has some people worried. Oh yeah, Bush at least had the wherewithal to show up at a Democratic retreat and seemed to handle himself well, even though there were a lot of peeved people there.
Next I want to tackle another issue that's dear to me that makes me believe Bush is either in collusion to screw us all or has his head so far up his father's ass that nothing's getting in out out of it any more. So, those of us out on the west coast have this little energy crisis going on. I personally don't live in California but I feel the effects of the crisis down there. In the beginning of 2001 things came to a head and California had to institute rolling blackouts to keep their grid from collapsing. Normally, California has an excess of power in the winter and a deficit in the summer when the Northwest has a surplus, and the two regions have happily traded power during those times. Now, however, California has outgrown it's supply. The news reports that the utilities didn't build enough capacity, hoarded money, what have you, but the reality is that unrestricted growth is catching up with our techology to provide.
So, Bush is sworn in as President and wades into the energy crisis. His first step was to proclaim he was acting boldly and order VP Cheney to do something about the crisis. What? Boldly telling other people to solve it? Then, the second thing he says is that he's willing to help california by relaxing air quality standards. California has a very real short term and long term crisis, and relaxing air quality standards is the very LAST thing that should be considered as a solution. If people were in danger of dying I could see it, but the goal now is to give them enough energy in the short term to at least not have disruption of services and to let them increase capacity and conservation for the long term.
The common sense thing to do would be to call for all people and corporations to try and conserve energy. If there aren't people there, turn off all the lights except those needed for safety. Set the Air Conditioning for 72 instead of 68 and vice versa for the heat. Spread out over many states that would be quite a savings. Once the conservation agenda is pushed, take a quick look at what could be done to boost capacity. If a lot of power generating plants are down for maintenance, bring in extra workers and work around the clock until the thing is fixed (if this is indeed an option; they may already be doing this). If there is a general need for more capacity then work out some streamlined guidelines and laws for production (note; I did not say relax standards) of new plants and stimulate that economy with some construction, baby!
We have existed for a long time with the attitude that we are above nature and can do whatever we want and people need to realize there are limits and that we are all responsible for our actions and must act responsibly if we want our country to survive and prosper. At some point we're going to need to limit our population, either through mandatory birth limits or caps on immigration. Healthy tax cuts for emmigrants, of course.
Bush seems bound and determined to impress his will on the American people. That's natural, that's what a leader does. But I cannot believe that he would make the choices he's making unless he were either fucking stupid or in collusion with a group that has their heads far up their asses as far as issues about the environment and the economy are concerned. I suspect Bush is thinking with his bible and not his brain. The evidence was there before the election. He's not as dumb as he acts, he just has a specific agenda for himself and his friends and group-thinkers.
Dear God, we have over SIX BILLION FUCKING HUMANS ON YOUR PLANET. Could we please have a new testament that has some common sense about POPULATION CONTROL in it? Is that too much to ask of your followers? I know they don't like thinking for themselves and acknowldging that there might actually be a bogieman out there in all of us, but they do seem to listen to what you say, even when it's contradictory.
By the way, I named this file bush1.htm, I originally though to do just "bush.htm" but I figured he's got room to grow. It worries me that we have a president that worries me enough to plan for expansion of bitching.
