Danger Close
Mike Yon, Apple Pie Publishers
Book cover

Right off the top: this is a good book. It is not your typical SF book in that the author doesn't focus one chapter on his life and then the rest on his military career with the obligatory afterward. Instead, Yon weaves his story around his childhood, teens, and early service life, jumping from one to another to lay out background that affected his decisions and actions at key points. This is not a diary and tell-all about US Army Special Forces as much as it is the autobiography of a man who served in Special Forces at a crucial time of his life.

Danger Close is an enjoyable and engrossing read, Yon is an excellent storyteller and tells a wide range of stories, ranging from childhood gags to military pitfalls. He is not afraid to examine his own actions and criticise them when he finds fault; for this reason this book stands out as a good, critical examination of many facets of the military and Special Forces. Those interesed in Army Special Forces or Special Forces in general should consider reading it; it is highly recommended.
